James started his career in construction working on the other side of the fence as recruiter for the industry working at Hayes where he spent 5 years developing his network and a deeper understanding of the business side of the industry. James eventually decided that rather than working for the construction industry he wanted to be part of it himself and started his studies towards a degree majoring in Quantity Surveying.

Having worked with Johnstone Construction to recruit staff for them he jumped at the chance to come on board as a Quantity Surveyor Cadet. James is loving the shift in career focus and having the opportunity to put into practice what he is studying in a good environment with great people.

Prior to his time at Hayes James spent 5 years in the USA while he studied towards a business degree at the Concordia University of Nebraska. It was during this time that he found a sport he might almost love more than rugby in baseball, which he played for his college team. James has always gravitated towards team sports and enjoys competition, he finds working on construction projects provides a similar environment.

When he’s not working hard on Johnstone Construction projects or putting in the hours to get his second degree in Construction Management he loves to spend time with his wife Sarah and catch up on the latest Jack Reacher novel.

“The Johnstone Construction culture and values were a big drawcard for me choosing to join the business, I really like the emphasis on honesty, hard work and integrity. It’s great to have the opportunity to work across civil and commercial projects and be part of a team that works towards a common goal, producing something tangible that we can be proud of.”
